Episode 27: Kite Racer swaps with Organic Farmer

Mike is one of the world’s youngest competitors involved in Traction Kiting. Having a dad who has won the world championship for kiting has definitely rubbed off on this cool 13-year old from Brantford, ON. Every weekend, Mike spends his time with his Dad going to the beach to fly several large two-lined kites. He also involves himself in activities such as Kite Buggying, Kite Land boarding and Kite Sailing. To Mike a “good day” would depend on getting “good winds”!

Meanwhile, Caitlin John works and lives on an organic farm. While she gets to enjoy the benefits of open space, tranquility and gourmet cooking, Caitlin also has to do a lot of hard work! From planting to weeding, to harvesting and gourmet preparation, this 14-year old does it all.

THE SWAP: Watch as Caitlin tries out the extreme sports lifestyle, and is challenged to launch and land a two-line kite all by herself as well as master a kite buggy. On the flip side, Mike Dinsmore will spend his first day getting dirty in the fields and end off his swap by preparing his produce in a gourmet restaurant!

SWAPPER JOURNAL: MIKE

At the organic farm, I got to see a bunch of animals and do work around the farm and I got to make a salad and pick salad in the fields. The most interesting thing that happened to me was when I went to the restaurant and made the salad. I was most unfamiliar or scared when I was around the animals because I don’t normally get to be around those types of animals. I was the most proud of myself when I made the salad and people complimented me at the restaurant. I will remember most the animals and making the salad.

SWAPPER JOURNAL: CAITLIN

It was very interesting, something I hadn’t done before. It was challenging but very rewarding when I accomplished my challenges. The coolest thing would have been doing the buggy racing and then being pulled by the kite in the air. At the very beginning of my SWAP and I was unsure of all the control/movements of the kite and I was afraid I’d crash it – which I did. I was most proud after doing the buggy because I had managed to keep it going for a little while – I really enjoyed it. What I will remember most is probably the first time that I got the kite up in the air, just the feeling of how strong it was.
